A606 Weathering Steel
ASTM A606 Type 4 is a high strength, low alloy (HSLA) grade of steel used when corrosion resistance and weight savings are important. Commonly referred to as weathering steel, A606 Type 4 steel contains copper and additional alloying elements such as chromium, nickel and silicon to enhance its atmospheric corrosion capabilities.
A606 Type 4 steel, when exposed to atmospheric elements such as rain, snow, ice and fog will develop a weathered orange-brown oxidation on the surface of the steel. This serves as a protective coating eliminating the need for painting and inhibits penetration of rust into the steel.
Valmont Tubing manufactures electric resistance welded (ERW) mechanical tubing up to 12.75" OD round and 6" square produced from weathering steel to an ASTM A847 tubing specification. For additional information on ASTM A847 tubing, please click here.
Specification Notes
- A606 steel can either be produced as hot rolled or cold rolled depending upon the requirement and wall thickness.
- When compared with regular carbon steel, high strength, low alloy A606 Type 4 steel provides greater strength capabilities in a lighter wall thickness allowing for weight reduction.
- ASTM A606 Type 4 steel has a minimum corrosion-resistance index of 6.0 according to ASTM Guide 101: The Predictive Method Based on the Data of Larabee-Coburn.
